Title: Web Content Developer/Coordinator—Graduate Assistant

The Communications and Marketing unit of the Office of External Relations within the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences (BSOS) seeks a creative and committed graduate student to fill the position of Web Content Developer/Coordinator. This Graduate Assistantship position will be responsible for developing and editing content for the College’s websites under the guidance of the Director of Communications and Marketing and the Associate Director of Communications and Marketing.

Job Description:

Supports the Communications and Marketing unit and the unit’s internal and external clients by:

·       Building customized models and pages within the Drupal framework to accommodate a wide range of content types;

·       Working with clients across the College to update/edit content for a variety of BSOS Drupal users and to help other Drupal users build content management skills;

·       Assisting with the regular updating of content on the College’s websites and coordinating applicable Web services to include the staging of graphics, text and embedded multimedia;

·       Assisting in the population of visual content using the Visix Digital Signage (video screen) platform—training will be provided;

·       Performing a limited number of administrative tasks and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

·       Experience with current versions of Drupal

·       Excellent interpersonal skills and comfort working in both a team environment and independently

·       Strong written and verbal communication skills

·       Ability to prioritize workload and respond appropriately to deadline pressures

Preferences:

·       Thorough knowledge of Drupal best practices and experience working on enterprise websites

·       Available to work a few hours every day M-W; alternative schedule of longer hours over fewer workdays can be determined as needed

Salary

·       Payment consistent with the regular University of Maryland graduate assistantship rate

·       Benefits of this appointment include: 10 Credits for Spring Semester, 10 Credits for Fall Semester, 8 Credits for Summer Term, 4 Credits for Winter Term, and participation in the employees’ health benefits program

R. RAHAMIMOFF TRAVEL GRANTS

PROGRAM FOR YOUNG SCIENTISTS

BSF is announcing the availability of funds for short scientific trips by young
American or Israeli scientists to the other country.
 
In 2012 the program will have two calls and  each will support 10 trips.  Grants
will be $4,000 each. This is the 2nd CALL for 2012.
The program is open to PhD students  and post-doc fellows doing research
that requires facilities or expertise  that are not available in their home
countries.
Applications will be evaluated on the basis of their merit in light of the overall
aim of the program, and the qualifications of the applicants. The grant will be
awarded through the institute that submits the application. As guiding principles,
support will be awarded to applications that meet the following criteria:

• The applicant is a young American or Israeli researcher, and the visit is to
the other country.
• The research is in an accredited higher education or scientific institution
(including hospitals).
• The applicant's research is in any of the scientific fields supported by the
BSF (full list is on the BSF website), regardless of the split program.
• The purpose of the trip is limited to the use of facilities, or acquiring
expertise not available in the applicant's home country.

Deadline for application submission is December 6, 2012 at 5 pm Israel time.
Applications that do not follow the instructions on the BSF website will not be
processed.

2013-2014 IAF Grassroots Development Ph.D. Fellowship Program

The deadline for applications for the 2013-2014 Fellowship Cycle of the IAF Grassroots Development Ph.D. Fellowship Program is JANUARY 22, 2013.

Fellowships are available to currently registered students who have advanced to candidacy (by the time research begins) for the Ph.D. in the social sciences, physical sciences, technical fields and the professions as related to grassroots development issues. Applications for clinical research in the health field will NOT be considered.

Awards are based on both development and scholarly criteria. Proposals should offer a practical orientation to field-based information. In exceptional cases the IAF will support research reflecting a primary interest in macro questions of politics and economics but only as they relate to the environment of the poor. The Fellowship Program complements IAF’s support for grassroots development in Latin America and the Caribbean, and preference for those applicants whose careers or research projects are related to topics of greatest interest to the IAF. These include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Organizations promoting grassroots development among poor and disadvantaged peoples;
• The financial sustainability and independence of development organizations;
• Trends affecting historically excluded groups, such as African descendants, indigenous peoples, women, people with disabilities and young people;
• Transnational development;
• The role of corporate social responsibility in grassroots development;
• The impact of globalization on grassroots development;
• The impact on the quality of life of the poor of grassroots development activities in such areas as sustainable agriculture and natural resource management, housing, health care, education, urban development, technology transfer, jobs creation, and marketing and small-enterprise development.

Funding is for between four and 12 months. Research during the 2013-2014 cycle must be initiated between June 1, 2013 and May 31, 2014.

IAF’s Fellowships provide support for Ph.D. candidates to conduct dissertation research in Latin America and the Caribbean on topics related to grassroots development. The Inter-American Foundation expects to award up to 15 Doctoral Field Research Fellowships in 2013.

Complete proposals include:

• A complete research prospectus - an application statement, a field research prospectus, a Curriculum Vitae (custom), and a Personal Statement;
• A letter of University Certification;
• A letter of affiliation from at least one host organization;
• Statement of IRB Status or proof of submission or approval;
• Graduate transcripts;
• Three academic letters of reference, one which must be from the chair of the applicant's dissertation committee;
• A Language Proficiency Report.

Selected candidates must present proof of candidacy and IRB exemption or approval prior to receiving funding or entering the field.  Complete application information and instructions are available at www.iie.org/iaf. 

Alumni Association Has Scholarships for Grad Students!

Thanks to its members, the Maryland Alumni Association has multiplied its scholarship offerings and expanded them beyond incoming students! The alumni association is proud to provide 15 scholarships this fall, including FIVE for graduate students who will each receive $3,000. Additionally one legacy student will be awarded $750 through the Col. J. Logan Schutz Legacy Scholarship. 

Ideal applicants will volunteer in their communities or on campus, participate in extracurricular activities and write a compelling essay on building Terrapin spirit among the student body. And, special consideration will be given to relatives of alumni association members.
